Key Responsibilities
Evaluate design projects and recommend sustainable practices in materials, lighting, HVAC, water use, and waste reduction
Advise on eco-friendly finishes, low-VOC paints, FSC-certified woods, and ethical sourcing
Provide guidance on certifications (LEED, WELL, Energy Star, etc.)
Collaborate with the design team to ensure selections align with sustainability goals
Research and maintain a database of green vendors, technologies, and innovations
Help educate clients on long-term benefits and options
Compensation
$40–$75/hour, depending on experience and project type
Flat-rate packages available for project sustainability audits or reports
Bonus available for successfully implemented solutions or certifications obtained
Retainer available for long-term consulting roles
Licensing & Requirements
No license required, but certification (LEED AP, WELL AP, etc.) is a strong plus
Must sign NDA and Independent Contractor Agreement
Must be comfortable presenting to both designers and clients
Must maintain digital portfolio or sample case studies (optional but ideal)
Workspace
Remote role, with optional site visits (local to Raleigh or per project)
Collaboration tools: Google Drive, Zoom, Asana, Canva
Reports may be shared via PDFs, visual summaries, or slide decks
Tools used may include: EPD databases, green material libraries, EPA and LEED resources
2+ years experience in sustainability consulting, green design, architecture, or environmental engineering
Strong knowledge of materials, environmental impact, and energy-efficient design
Familiar with LEED, WELL, Passive House, or other certifications
Excellent communication and report writing skills
Bonus: experience with LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), green construction standards, or supply chain analysis
